Advice on Buying a brand new camper trailer.
« on: November 04, 2014, 06:46:16 PM »
As the thread title says I am after people's experience with buying a brand new camper trailer and negotiating price.

No need to mention company names or actual costs.

In general, Do the dealers move on price (how much off retail advertised price), throw in extras as deal sweeteners or anything else to get the sale?

Or is the price "the price".

I am looking at Australian brand CTs

Cheers

Trailer price is typically the starting price and then you haggle on the extras.

BTW checkout a Customline ;)

like cars really....
depends if they are in high demand... if they are, and selling well - good luck...

if theres a waiting list (some of the Aussie made Offroad caravans have 12-18mths waiting lists) they don't move..

Price, I reckon computer says no!

Extras, well that's worth haggling on.

Plenty of good near new or units three or four years old out there at great prices.

Thanks for the reply's guys.
I was just putting it out there from the sales pitch I have been getting from the new CT dealers
Well it seems that you guys are correct in saying that price seems fairly set and extras are where you can get a deal on.
I just wasn't sure how it all works because this is my first CT purchase.

I did look at 2nd hand units getting about but the ones I want seem to hold value extremely well and for an extra couple of grand I can have a brand new one, never used, full warranty, current year model so I am thinking, bugger it, and supporting the industry and buying new.

Plus it's always nice to get brand new stuff.

Hopefully something comes off in the next few days..

I shopped around for my first camper and ended up purchasing interstate. The local guys were idiots so I didn't want to buy it from them. Saved $3k or 10% which ever way you want to look at it.

Like anything they will either move on the price or throw in some extras if they want it gone

It also depends if they are building it for you or it is new and already exists. If it already exists they will often negotiate as they will want to move it along

I simply saw mine advertised monitoried it for a month and went in there with a reasonable offer that they took

I got quotes direct from the dealer got an idea of extras and what they cost. Once I knew what the price was I then looked at a few camping shows to see what discounts they offered. Once I had this info I put up my offer at the show. Was all done and dusted.

Beware though as not all campers are the same. I reckon quality counts and you will more than likely get caught out if you skimp on a quality product. There are a lot of operators around these days so sorting the wheat from the chaff can take time.

My advice, is if you can find a good second hand one dont bother buying new. a lot of people buy these and only use them once.

also they add the little extras you need.

i know because i was one of those sellers.
