Day 5
What another beautiful day on Fraser Island we definitely couldn’t complain about fine weather and the stunning blue sky and not a cloud in sight. Everyone was up early sorry Dave (Trackabout Offroad Campers) but we couldn't wait for your arrival, but instead we headed off at 8am for the trek up to Sandy Cape. Rusty was also up early as he was busy packing up for the trip back to Bundy as we headed off up the beach. Today’s tide times were perfect for the drive up the beach with Amanda again provided the odd bit of commentary. First port of call was the traditional drop off of rubbish and then off we went with Yogi leading the pack. It was a nice easy drive up to Indian Head which we all crossed the by-pass road with ease, letting each other know when we were through then headed up to Champagne Pools but didn’t stop this time just headed straight to Orchid Beach. Yogi’s 80 series got a little bit of air under the tyres with a few surprises along the track, but overall was easy going and Amanda keeping an eye out for oncoming vehicles. A quick stop was made at the Orchid Beach store where a toilet was located and some souvenirs were picked up, just another stubbie cooler for the collection. From Orchid Beach we headed for Sandy Cape as we knew we had some tricky spots at Nagala and Brown Rocks we didn’t want to get caught out by the tide, the tide was still on the way out so that was in our favour. We soon arrived at Nagala Rocks and all the vehicles stopped to have a look and each driver made their own decision if they wanted to proceed or not. Yogi and Paul (Paul4Nat) went for a quick drive to see what the track was like and get a photo of the entry to the track on the way back as the hardest bit was always going to be heading back racing the tide. Sablesoft decided not to tackle the rest of the drive to Sandy Cape and headed off to meet everyone in the afternoon back at camp and also met up at camp with Dave (Trackabout Offroad Campers). Everyone else made the decision to go full steam ahead for Sandy Cape. Yogi and Amanda provided some more commentary again on how different the drive was to Sandy Cape compared to October 2011 and January 2012. Even though a lot of the time the rocks could be avoided at Browns Rocks due to the outgoing tide, Yogi did suggest trying to drive over the rocks as there was every chance we would all need to drive over the rocks on the way back as the tide would be on the way back in and also you can get caught out with the odd sink hole with decomposing weed being buried by sand during the incoming and outgoing tides. We all still continued onto Sandy Cape and as we came around the bend it was announced by Amanda ‘Welcome to Sandy Cape’ again with a bit of commentary as to where campgrounds are located and then made it to the entrance to the lighthouse. Nat (Paul4Nat) exited their 100 series and just said ‘WOW’ and thank you for bringing everyone to such a beautiful part of Fraser. A few of the guys are keen for a boys fishing trip to Sandy Cape now after Yogi’s commentary on camping at Sandy Cape and the fish he has caught at the location. Whilst BigJules and Laith decided to tackle the walk to the lighthouse which on all reports was worth the walk but would wear shoes next time, the remaining of the group jumped in their 4WD and headed off down the beach following Yogi who was in search of a nice spot for the kids to play on the dunes, big kids and small could have a fish and to have some lunch – the view speaks for itself. Nomad, Ute701, Niley and Blueroo headed off after spending some time with the group at Sandy Cape and spent the afternoon at Waddy Point but before arriving at Waddy Point stopped off for a look at Ocean Lake. Waddy Point is definitely a beautiful spot for a swim and the climb up to the hilltop is worth the drive. The remaining MySwaggers of Yogi, Amanda (Boo Boo), DaznBec, Frostd, Jetcrew, V8ute, Paul4Nat were soon joined by the keen adventurers of BigJules and Laith where Yogi was first to wet a line and then was soon joined by Daz, Lockie, Paul, Ethan and Frostd whilst others went for a walk and looked at some stunning shells and sea life. Daz was now the pro fisherman with catching a few fish with Jasmine borrowing Yogi’s ruler for Daz to measure all the fish he caught – that new Alvey did come in handy, actually everyone fishing had some success with catching a few fish whilst at Sandy Cape. Amanda and Yogi were first in for a swim and not too long after were joined by others for a quick dip as the peace and calm of the ocean was vastly different to the ocean in front of camp MySwag. Lunch was soon on with V8ute firing up the webber who kindly cooked Yogi and Amanda’s lunch also. Many also made the trek up the dunes to ride down the dunes or do the awesome jump off the dunes where a few ended up in a roll with Troy (part of the Jetcrew crew) collecting Terry (Frostd) on the way down. Terry needed a swim to clean off all the sand collected on the way down, it was a great bit of entertainment for those at the bottom of the dune. We all then headed off down the beach for a quick group shot of the vehicles who were still at Sandy Cape, once again the photos speak for themselves on the beautiful blue water, clear skies and the sand that just goes on and on. On the way back a few stopped off for a quick beer at the Orchid Beach pub/store and then headed off for camp to beat the afternoon high tide. Again all the MySwaggers met at camp Yogi for the traditional daily donation draw with the following prizes and winners:- 50W solar charging unit with panel, reg and cable (donated by Jetcrew + Mandrake) went to Bugone, Welding helmet (donated by Smoko) went for Larz n Crew, 2 windup torches (donated by GLC) went to V8ute and Larz n Crew, carton of Hahn Super Dry and glasses (donated by Paul4Nat) went to V8ute and Jetcrew, security cable (donated by GGPatrol) went to V8ute, bottle of Bundaberg Rum (donated by Nomad) went to Larz n Crew and McWilliams Port (donated by Smoko) went to Frostd. Also it was announced that to raise further monies there was a lolly jar guessing game, for $1.00 you could have a guess at three lolly jars. One having Chupa Chups lolly pops, another red frogs and the last one jelly babies – for a guess see Amanda tomorrow. Everyone had a huge day so it was another quiet and early night ready for the “The Fraser Cup” Tatts, Tiaras and Tutus. Gee what else is up Camp Yogi's sleeve was a comment heard from a few of the MySwaggers. Few beers around the pig and off to bed for all.
