Nice to hear that some ladies share the chores of driving.

Mrs Stozz ... I too was taught by my dad.  We had a farm so it was important that we could all drive forward, backward and reverse things ... my first drive was our hay truck ... it was my job to ensure they hay bales got up the elevator ... if they didn't ... dad had to get off and move them ... and I got a ear full ... so I learned where my tyres were early in the piece.

I own a box trailer, but it hasn't moved for a few years.  Reversing the trailer just "came back to me" after the first try ... like riding a bike ... or getting bales up that elevator!

It's a skill that I think you should not dismiss!  Especially since the chance of being forced to use the skill may very well come up in your adventures if things go horribly wrong.  If they ever take my bloke away by RFDS ... I certainly want to be able to pack it up, reverse to it, put it on and know I can get it out to him ASAP.  Abandoning the camper and ute would be the very last thing I'd want to do.

She reverses when hooking up - only because my instructions can be followed whereas hers lead to an argument!!

As for the driving, 99.9% me although my wife has offered a few times to take over. Funnily enough, last time we did a big trip (without camper) & she took over, it bucketed down with rain & I had to hop back in the drivers seat

We share the driving on long trips, but she can't...or won't, get it through her head that sometimes she needs a lower gear because of the extra weight   :-\
And like others, hooking up is straight forward and peaceful when she does the driving and me instructing  :)

My husband does most of the driving when towing the CT (which I'm happy for him to do) but I have done a few trips- recently I drove 6 1/2 hours to 1770 because he had done an all nighter at work and was too tired to drive. I appreciate the fact that he knows when to hand the keys over and he knows I'm a good driver too.
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present.

Mrs Snow usually drives the couple of hrs in the middle of a days tripping. She doesn't like city driving with the camper so I do those bits. I do all the reversing, but the thread reminds me that I need let her have go. Usually when parked I won't unhitch the rig if I don't need to, but if I need to hook up camper the reversing camera alleviates the likelihood of a dust up.

Even when we drove from Port Augusta to home in one day (12 hours) she only drove 2 hours just before dusk so I could have a power nap.

I will do most the driving but if driving for over 8 hours I ask the wife to take over as 8 hours is the limit with out a beer.

I think it might be more useful to the OP for those who were initially reluctant to tow mentioned how they were encouraged to tow, or for their partners to explain how they achieved this outcome.
Perhaps suggesting her husband do short stints, say from one town to the next, or the 'last leg' to a town on a longer stretch, might help ease him back into driving.
Hope all goes well for you in this regard.

I do often say "hey you wanna drive" and she says "not while you're awake" and I say "well I can't sleep while I'm a passenger" and so it goes.  She's a very good driver, the problem lies with me...

We both share but i would say it is a 70 ; 30 split with me doing the majority

We have tried practicing but if there is another camper in sight she will not attempt to reverse the trailer into the spot

I normally drive everywhere , but have been naughty and lost my licence just before our last trip, my wife towed the caravan with the patrol for 6000 km no trouble.

She is keen for me to get my licence back though.

Hubby has driven 80 % of our trip around oz So far but i do offer all the time but he hates being a passenger. I did drive most of the Gibb river road as i also occasionally get bored as passenger too which he forgets.  I am ok at trailer reversing but its the age old saying practice makes perfect. Even Hubby says he's not 100 % at trailer reversing but getting better considering its our permanent home at the moment.

After seeing an older lady loose her partner suddenly while they travelled oz where she didn't even have a licence and they were on a highway 100km north of Carnarvon WA, i believe everyone needs to at least know how to hook up and drive in an emergency. This lady had sadly been stuck in Carnarvon for 4 months by the time we met her as no money to put her bus on a truck to east coast, no licence to drive herself (she had never been behind the wheel So had no idea where to start either), and her family couldn't help either $ wise. We managed to pull some strings and get a wonderful company to pick her bus and trailer up and pick up the tab as well as fly her home. Moral of the story, at the very least everyone needs to at least know how to pack up on your own and hook up, even if its only to the nearest town. Doesn't matter if you are not that confident. Just need to know you can do it. If you practice it, obviously the better off you are. If you have kids, teach them how to at least put everything away ready to set off.

Bugger we got a reverse camera for the dmax when we ordered canopy as I was sure I would not be able to see much and it is my daily driver then had to cancel canopy order after 7 months of waiting for it to arrive lol

I used to do all the driving, but since we now usually take the Boss' car she drives. I'm quite happy in the passenger seat with my six pack for the trip!

On some of our work trucks the reversing camera has a microphone in it so you can hear people talking when you put it in reverse. So when you are backing in somewhere and the person directing you says something like "what is this idiot doing" you can hear them through the radio!

I tend to do most of the driving, mainly cos I enjoy it.
On long trips we will swap every so often, and she has no problems with towing the CT. It doesn't give me much rest though as I'm a bit of a nervous passenger (read: likes to be in control!!) ;D
