What to do at Canberra

Hi All,

I am heading to Canberra next week and have the usual things I want to do like the War Memorial, Questacon, Mint. But what other things should be on my TO DO list. Also where is a good spot to go to play in the snow. I have a 7 year old so I don't need slopes etc I just need to play in the snow. any help would be awesome...... Thanks.

I'm unsure about the snow. But the telstra tower at black mountain is fantastic. Great views to be had.

If your kid likes gimmicky things then just outside of Canberra only about 20mins is a place called cockington greens, it's about an acre of the smallest miniture towns and so on. It's really good to see the detail gone into it but unfortunately it's not the cheapest but it fills in a few hours.

If you want to see the snow you need to head over towards tumut via the cotter (there is a new dam just been built).

Head out until you hit the dirt road and thenl you get to piccadilly circus.  Turn left and head up towards Mt Franklin.  You should get some snow up there.  It won't be useable but lovely none the less.

You can have a bbq up there in the shelters at the end of the road.  If you feel like a walk you can head along the closed road towards Mt Ginnini and Mt Somethingarathathatsixbeershasmademeforgetthenameof. 

When finished head back to piccadilly and go straight across the road onto two sticks trail up to Mt Coree. Great lookout up there.  Come back down from Coree and turn right, follow your nose back to the bitumen that you came in on.

Mate the National Museum is pretty cool and the kids enjoy it, they have put a fair bit of work into the National Aboretum and the cafe there serves a great breakfast. As has been said Telstra Tower is a brilliant lookout and Mount Ainslie, behind the War Memorial showcases Mr Griffins design quite well.

As of today the Brindies holds some snow on some of the higher ridges which can be seen from town. Dazzlers description is spot on but be careful if your there on a weekend as the enduro bikes ride around there un checked. Mount Cooree is cool, depending on what vehicle your in. There are a few sizeable loose rocks in places and the last time we were there we had to negotiate a nice size mud hole at the very bottom. Most tracks will be very muddy.  While your there Cotter Bends has a brilliant BBQ area and the new park is a hit with kids.

All the places you've mentioned are well worth a visit.

We lived in Canberra for 12 yrs and as a place to raise a family it was pretty good.  If you like Asian food sammys kitchen in bunda st or timmys at manuka are great!

Don't forget to explore and not stick to the main rd.  you will enjoy war memorial.

Have fun.

Oh, and we got a std beetle to my coree!  Aided by substance absuse!

Whilst there is snow up at Mount Franklin - you need to check whether the road is open to 4x4s.  Conditions can change rapidly and it is a gravel road for about 25 kms or more.   If its strats to snow when you are up there you could be trapped.  The cops get the irits rescuing people. There is no mobile phone coverage.

Better and safer alternative is to go to Corin Forest - if coming along Paddy's River Road from the Cotter turn right at a major intersection past the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (which is also worth a visit).  The road is bitumen right the way there.  The facilities include man made snow as well as whatever has recently fallen.  Your will start to get some snow on the side of the road about 5kms out.  It has toboggan runs and other fund stuff - but not cheap.  You can go and just see the snow and have a hot chocolate without paying an access fee.

Hi mate, I've been in Canberra for about 10 years now.  The 7 year old would love Questacon.  The war memorial as stated is fantastic, and even the 7 year old will enjoy the video shows inside at the back of it.  It is probably a half day.  Mount Ainslie gives a good perspective of the layout of Canberra.  If the younger is sports minded, then the Institute of Sport will also be a hit at Bruce ( a northern suburb, 8 ks from Civic).

Parliament house is also good, and a drive around the Diplomatic area where the Embassies are is interesting to see.

The Bridabellas are good at the moment.

2 .5 hrs up the road to Mt Selwyn or Thredbo is good for the snow.  You can hire a toboggan from canberra or Cooma, walk up the hills and toboggan down free, or go to Selwyns, hire a toboggan for 5 plus the lift tickets.

It is chilly here at the moment, minus 2 overnight to 13 during the day.

We have lived in Canberra for about 2 1/2 years and love it.

Some really good parks for your 7 year old.

The National Arboretum has a fantastic play area. It is free to go up there but parking is a bit pricey.

A place called Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve very good as well.

Plus the big ones as mentioned.

Not sure if you guys like hot chocolate, if so San Churro is fantastic.

Reminiscing here.

Has anyone ever done Long Plain Road from the goodradigbee across towards Mt Selwyn through Namadgi?

They closed it a few years ago due to Bogans mud running in the button grass.  What a fantastic trip that was.

The La Monte 24hr Mountain Bike festival is awesome.  If thats not on you could line up some Labour polies, hopefully Rudd's in  town. If not just catch a plane out.

Years ago went in that way through Carters Rd fire trail I think. Spent a week in there exploring/getting lost.  Found places like Blue Holes amongst others. Eventually found our way out unfortunately !

Thanks everyone. We ended up @ War Memorial, Questacon, Mint. we went to Corrin Forrest for the snow (man made only but the daughter had a blast on the toboggan) On the way home went and looked at the Cotter dam, the parks under the dam are spectacular. A few little camping grounds around there that operate on honesty boxes along the river that would be awesome to stay at some have facilities some don't. We did eat at Sammy's I love my Chinese food and I must say it up there with the best I have had. Our 11 year old son was down there with his school so we stayed in the same park for moral support..
